    WeatherTech Bug Shields

Protecting your windshield and paint job of your hood is no joke. In fact, it can be a nasty ordeal and involve replacing a windshield or using loads of touchup paint. But most of us would like to avoid all of that if at all possible. And if I could buy pass this general nuisance and annoying cleaning completely all while doing so with style and flare, that’d be pretty sweet too.

If you’re like me, then you’ll want to take a look at WeatherTech’s Bug Shield line. These babies look sweet, have OE style, are low profile with the ability to deflect bugs and stones like a higher profile shield, and they install easy too.

And for those of you who are cost conscience, you’ll just need to note the cost of a touch up bottle of paint or two and a windshield replacement to know that this product could save you some real cash too. And again it looks great and is designed to fit the contours of your hood, looking like it belongs there--like it should have been there when you drove your truck off the lot.

But what if you’re on the fence? What if the cool look isn’t enough? Want to know the science behind the hood protector? Need to be able to explain this charge for a bug shield on your family credit card to your wife in a way that sounds and even is quite plasible?

Don’t worry. We’ve been where you are, my friend.

Let’s talk bug guards for a minute.

What’s the purpose of bug shields?

Bug shields, also known as hood protectors or deflectors, are designed to intercept everything from rocks to flying insects and redirect them up into the air and over the top of the cab of your vehicle. This means that these hazardous materials that could damage your paint job and your windshield are redirected via wind and air currents up and away from your ride.

In other words, these products really are like shields for the front of your truck, stopping all the nasty and dangerous stuff you might not be able to avoid while flying down the road from making contact with your hood and windshield.

Now you might be thinking, what’s the big deal about bugs? I mean, you can clearly see the issue with rocks and anything heavy or dense like that. But bugs? I mean, what kinda harm can they do?

We hear you. The rock part seems pretty obvious. And maybe it’s because this one happens all too often, doesn’t it?

How often have you been driving down the road, minding your own business when suddenly out of nowhere you hear it--a load pop. A rock has just smashed into your windshield, probably kicked up by someone in front of you--maybe someone who doesn’t have decent mud flaps. It’s an epidemic, I swear. The lack of good mud guards in this country is like a plague from the devil himself.

    But I digress.

You hear that loud noise, out of nowhere, and watch as the cracks spider web across your windshield. And even if it doesn’t cause serious damage or doesn’t impair your ability to see, it’s still unsightly. And if you don’t get it fixed, it’s just going to keep growing, bit by bit, until you do have to fix it.

These days a lot of insurance companies will cover this kind of issue, but still it’s a hassle and often will cost you $50 to a hundred bucks to repair at least, and that’s if you get those guys who just inject a little gel into the crack and stop it from spreading. If you’ve gotta replace the whole damn windshield, you’re talking about some serious bucks for the new glass and then even more for the install.

Yeah, everyone can see the value in protecting your windshield. And I can see wanting to keep rocks from chipping your paint job too, but why are these things often referred to as bug guards?

If you’ve ever driven down a back country road at night in the middle of the summer, then you already know the use of a bug shield and why it’s called that. Picture it. You’re flying along, just cruising, listening to music. Maybe your best friend or significant other is by your side. You’re just singing along or talking about nothing--having a nice night. When all of the sudden, out of nowhere, you fly underneath a streetlight and get bombarded. It sounds like the smallest little ol’ machine gun just pelted you’re windshield like 500 times, because that’s who many bugs you just destroyed in a flash.

No not only is this a pain in the butt and gross to clean up, but often times around here it’s even dangerous because these bug guts can really mess up your ability to see while driving. And be cautious about that windshield wiper, my friend. Cause that might just make matters worse, especially if you’re running low on wiper fluid.

And you might be thinking that a low profile hood guard like this WeatherTech, well it doesn’t stick up high enough to be able to intercept all those bugs. And you’d be right. But you’re missing something about the design here. The guard doesn’t have to hit all the bugs to redirect them. It just needs to slightly alert your vehicle’s aerodynamics.

If you’ve ever seen an illustration of the aerodynamics of a pickup truck, you’d know that when air strikes the front of your vehicle, at speed, it has to rush back along the sides and up over the top of the hood. From there, the air over the hood reaches the windshield and is sling shotted up and over the top of the cab.

The only probably with this is the momentum will carry anything not as light as a gas into the windshield or your grille guard rather than over them. Hence all the bug guts all over your hood and windshield.

So what a good hood protector does is alert that current. Instead of the air rushing right over the top of the hood, you’ll see that the WeatherTech Bug shield ends with a little flurrish, or curve almost straight up.

This curve directs the air and the current up and over the top of your cab, making almost a mini pocket of vacuum directly behind your guard. And that, my friends, is how a good bug shield works. Yes, some bugs are going to hit the shield and be deflected. But many more will get caught up in this new current of air and be slung up and over the top of your vehicle.

Again, this product doesn’t just look good. This is stellar design done right. And did we mention it is made in America and backed by a three year warranty?

    Cause, yeah, it is.
