WeatherTech Low Profile Bug Shield
When the nice weather hits your neck of the woods, it is time to take your truck out for a ride. But even if the weather is great, that doesn’t mean you’re free to hit the road without any worries at all. Because great weather often brings about the arrival of other road hazards. We aren’t talking about no snow here, but you could be thinking about thunderstorms and such, and yes, certainly those can be dangerous.
But no we’re thinking of something other than the weather here. We’re talking about bugs. Yes, when the nice weather comes around, you’ve gotta start watching out for the bugs. And certainly bugs in your backyard can be a pain in the butt, but even worse could be the bugs you don’t know about--the bugs you won’t see until it is too late.
These road hazards aren’t like the other kinds you’re likely to encounter. This isn’t black ice or a downed tree branch, flooded roadway or strong winds causing your vehicle to sway. This is a completely unseen and unpredictable paint damaging hazard. And you might not even know the damage has started to occur until it’s too late.
I think the first time someone learns about this issue you might be tempted to scoff. I mean, bugs damaging your paint job? Really? Insects are just so tiny. How could they possibly hurt your big truck in any way? And even if it does hurt your paint job, certainly the damage would be so small and insignificant that it wouldn’t really matter. But it turns out these silent stalking insectoids really do have it out for your paint job. And the damage won’t stop there if you don’t stay on top of it as a truck owner.
Let’s talk about the number one cause of premature hood damage and rust: bug guts.
Again, bear with me. The first time I heard about this, I was a skeptic myself.
First, it turns out that anything travelling at a high enough speed can damage your paint job or at the very least the top level of it or the clear coat. I know what you’re thinking: how fast can a bug really be moving?
Well, it’s less the speed of the bug and more the speed of your truck. Compared to how fast you’re flying down the road, that insect that smashes into your hood and windshield may have been barely moving. But if you’re doing a steady 60 miles per hour or more, that bug hits your truck at that same rate.
So basically imagine somehow throwing a pebble or rock 60 miles per hour directly into your hood. Now do that--I don’t know--like a few hundred times every day for the next few months until it gets too cold for insects to be out around my neck or the woods, or if you’re in a warmer part of the States, do it all year long. You see where we’re going with this.
And the issue doesn’t stop with the impact either. Rather what’s more disconcerting is what happens afterwards. It turns out that many bug guts or insides are acidic. While your clear coat is designed to take a lot of damage, once it is penetrated, the acid based fluids inside many insects will start to eat away at your paint job over time.
If you’ve ever seen a really caked on and dried dead bug on a windshield or vehicle hood, then you’ve seen what we are talking about. This process causes the chemical decay of the paint itself, which over time and after enough impacts can cause the metal of your hood to become exposed.
This actually helped explain a key damage spot I’ve noticed over the years on older style pickup trucks. You’ve likely seen this yourself--truck hoods with extensive sun damage and rust along the ridge of the hood or the part of the hood that extends the highest above your vehicle.
Yeah, that’s probably a combination of insect gut damage followed by sun damage followed by rain and water damage leading to rust.
So the first step, the part of that process you want to stop, is the bug gut part. And even if you don’t have a metal hood, you still don’t want your paint job ruined by a swarm of annoying flies smashing into your truck.
To protect your hood from this kind of damage, you need a top quality hood protector, like WeatherTech’s Low Profile Bug Shield. This product intercepts bug impacts right where they hit most often--the tip of your hood. And when an insect hits your acrylic hood protector, the flexible material will slingshot that bug up and over your hood. This redirects the path of the hapless insectoid and pushes it higher into the aerodynamic stream that will carry it up and over the top of your truck’s cab.
What’s great about this hood protector is that all the science and design that went into it to protect your hood also is married to the great style and shape of the bug shield. It looks great on the tip of your truck hood and protects the hood as well.
You’d be hard pressed to find a better product in this category, and WeatherTech also manufactures all of their products, including this great bug shield right here in the US of A. Protect your hood today and do so in style with a WeatherTech Hood Protector.
