Element E50 Fire Extinguisher
A Non-Toxic, Eco-Friendly, Lightweight Extinguisher that Leaves No Mess After Use
Fire extinguishers haven’t changed much in the last century. Case in point, go check out any old Three Stooges film, and you’ll likely see Larry, Moe, and Curly all doing some gag with one of those red fire extinguishers very much like the ones we currently use today. And don’t get me wrong. As a heavy comic or action movie prop, those suckers are perfect. Think of just about any film in which a character has to pick up something impromptu to fight with and it seems like there’s almost always a heavy duty fire extinguisher nearby. Could be that the damn things are just about ubiquitous so it makes for easy writing, since via regulation you have to have at least one just about everywhere you might go to eat, drink, or sleep for that matter. But I think there’s another aspect to their constant silverscreen prominence over the years: they’re f-ing heavy.
There’s probably one nearby you somewhere. Go ahead. Go try to pick it up. Even some of the smaller ones can weigh in at upwards of 25 lbs. And let’s not even talk about the huge industrial ones. Not only are they cumbersome, but they are also pressurized and leave disgusting residue after use, so if you should end up in an actual fire, even if you do manage to get the blaze under control, you’ll have to deal with a bunch of foam spray retardant afterwards. There’s gotta be a better way.
That’s exactly what the founders of Element thought when they began development on their E50 handheld portable fire extinguishers for the European Space Program. This new kind of fire extinguisher had to be lightweight, easily operable using only one hand, non-pressurized, maintenance free, and wouldn’t it be great if it didn’t leave any nasty residue and was non-toxic and eco-friendly too. Via superior chemical engineering, Element developed a fire extinguisher line that had all that and more. In fact, Element Fire Extinguishers are the most versatile and easy to use fire extinguishers ever made, and they last up to 5 times longer than traditional fire extinguishers, giving you plenty of time to put out just about any fire. And whereas traditional fire extinguishers are only certified to put out some kinds of fires, the Element Extinguisher can handle everything from a Wood or Trash fire on up to a Cooking Oil or Grease fire, the difficult to deal with K Fire Classification. And an E50 can handle flammable liquids like gasoline and even electrical fires too. These babies are likely to be replacing the outdate traditional extinguishers here in the US very soon, just like it did over in Europe. And there’s even video demonstrations showing an E50 being used to put out a car fire over on the YouTubes. We can’t think of any reason why most Jeep and Truck owners shouldn’t have one in their vehicle at all times. And if you’re a camper or outdoorsman, you might want to pack a pair. Let’s get into the dirty details on this non-toxic, eco-friendly handheld fire extinguisher.
Bullet Point Breakdown of the Element E50 Fire Extinguisher
No time to read this whole article? Just want the quick and dirty dets? “Too long; didn’t read” you’re fav acronym? Don’t worry. We hear ya. Here’s our Midwest Aftermarket Bullet Point Breakdown of the Element E50 Fire Extinguisher:
- A Handheld, Easy to Operate Fire Extinguisher
- The next big advancement in fire control and fire fighting is here
- Leaves no gross or toxic residue behind
- Unlike traditional fire extinguishers, the E50 requires NO annual maintenance of any kind
- A Non-pressurized device
- No fears of it becoming damaged and de-pressurizing in shocking or dangerous fashion
- Lasts nearly 5 times longer than traditional fire extinguishers
- Lets you fight the fire longer and more calmly, knowing you have plenty of time to handle it--up to 50 seconds in fact
- Potassium Nitrate filmed device--no water or foam under pressure
- Uses a chemical reaction to fight the fire
- Unlike traditional extinguishers that physically smoother a fire, the E50 interrupts the fire’s natural chain reaction combustion process
- In other words, the Potassium gobbles up the Oxygen near the heat and robs the fire of its fuel: O2
- This targeted chemical reaction does not effect any of the breathable oxygen in the room, just the fire’s combustion reaction
- What’s left after the fire is put out is Nitrogen gas, some Potassium Oxide, and a bit of water vapor
- Element Fire Extinguishers can handle any classification of Fire, unlike most traditional devices
- Tackles Class A Fires, like Wood, Coal, and Trash fires, with ease
- Extinguishes Class B fires from flammable liquids and gases like gasoline and natural gas very quickly
- Weighs less than a pound, up to 10 times lighter than most traditional extinguishers
- Never expires, and requires no annual servicing
- Costs less than most advanced CO2 and Wet Chemical Extinguishers
- Capable of putting out nearly any class of fire (save Class D metal fires)
- Easier to use than most common fire extinguishers
- Developed for the European Space Program
- In use in over 30 countries around the world
- The most versatile and innovative fire extinguisher ever made
- The Element E50: a revolution in fight fires
Element E50 Fire Extinguisher
When it comes to fighting fires, instead of innovating over the years, we’ve largely compartmentalized. If you’ve ever worked in a restaurant then you know exactly what I mean. There’d be a special fire extinguisher just for grease fires caused mostly by friers. Then you’d have a different kind of fire extinguisher for everything else. And while there appear to be 7 or even 8 different styles of extinguisher on the market today, there’s only one that can handle just about every common type of fire you might encounter, except maybe at a metalsmith’s forge.
Why has it taken so long for us to get here? Perhaps we’ve been stuck in the past, keeping fire extinguishers the same old same old for so very long. But when the European Space Program told Element designers that they needed an extinguisher to end all fire extinguishers, the scientists got to work and came up with something revolutionary.
Most traditional fire extinguishers on the market today work in a similar fashion: they smoother the fire physically. Some of them also work to reduce or remove heat from the fire and few even add a secondary or latent chemical reaction into the mix.
But no one appears to have thought to flip that script, so to speak. What if you could use a chemical reaction to pull the oxidizer (oxygen) out of the equation, so to speak. What if you removed the oxygen via another chemical reaction, all while forming a layer of non-combustible gas that is heavier than air which aids in sealing off the fire beneath a temporary invisible blanket.
This concept removes the oxygen from the fire reaction, putting out the fire very rapidly, and it prevents more oxygen from rushing in to re-ignite by forming a gaseous membrane over the fuel source of the fire. Imagine that a fire needs three things to burn: fuel, heat, and an oxidizer (typically oxygen). If you remove any one of those aspects, you shut down the combustion reaction. In this case, the E50 pulls the oxygen away from the flame and then smoothers the heat under the gas, providing both a chemical and physical reaction that shuts down the fire very rapidly.
And if that was all too much, just think of the E50 and it’s big industrial brother the E100 as pulling the Oxygen away from the fire and smothering it, not with wet messy spray but with cool gas.
It’s both incredibly brilliant and ingenious, and one of the best parts is that it doesn’t leave any messy foam or residue after the fire is out that needs to be cleaned up.
In fact, the only thing you need to worry about after finishing up putting out the fire is to carefully handle the E50 and let it cool off before disposing of it. The end especially will be particular hot to the touch following the reaction, so you should be very careful with it.
What’s great about the E50 also is that it never needs to be inspected and will last forever. Since the inert solid chemicals within are not pressurized and won’t react until they hit the air outside, you can store this baby indefinitely and it will still be ready to go should a fire ever break out.
What’s the last thing you want to be thinking when you’re trying to put out a fire? I wonder if this extinguisher is expired. Yeah, you don’t have to worry about that with Element.
This is the revolution in fire safety we’ve been waiting for. And with Element expanding to North America, it’s time we too stock up and be more prepared for any potential hazards we might experience involving fire both on and off the road.
