Undercover Armor Flex Review
A Brand New Line-X Textured Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
Undercover is about to launch a revolutionary new product--a hard folding tonneau cover with a top that is textured and coated with Line-X. If you know anything about Line-X, you likely know that it is most commonly used to coat items big and small to protect them from the elements and corrosion. Line-X is even often used for spray-in bed liners.
This material is extremely durable and adds an element of style and texture to this new tonneau cover. We are so excited to be offering this new hard folding truck bed cover from Undercover.
We first got a preview of Armor Flex back at the SEMA show. We were both impressed and kind shocked. I mean, why hadn’t anyone thought to do something like this before? Combining the protective coating of Line-X with a hard folding tonneau cover? Once we saw it, honestly, Armor Flex just seemed right. We couldn’t really imagine going back.
Every hard tri-fold truck bed cover adds a certain level of security. And there are some features that are pretty ubiquitous, so we thought we’d start with everything that really sets the Armor Flex ahead of the game.

Line-X: What It Does & Why You Need It
Let start with the totally obvious stuff, just in case you don’t know what Line-X is. Don’t worry. We won’t judge you.
What is a protective coating for?
What is Line-X, exactly?
Line-X is a protective coating often used on aftermarket truck and jeep parts as well as to coat both truck beds and even do full exterior spray coatings for most vehicles. Line-X is a thin coating that adds a bit of texture too. Designed to be impact-resistant and protective against the elements, including water, snow, and hail, Line-X also makes surfaces super easy to clean.
This versatile and durable protective layer adds fade resistance and UV protection too, making Line-X a great option for any part that is likely to be exposed to weather, sun, and every day wear and tear. Many Line-X products also have custom paint options.
Line-X comes with two finish options also: heavy and fine. You’ve likely seen the heavy before. It has much more extreme texture and used to be the go-to for spray in truck beds. Today, many customers prefer the fine-textured finish, which is much more smooth than the heavy, while still providing some friction and texture.
Line-X recently launched their new and improved Line-X Ultra also. Designed to be ever more thin and still just as protective, new Line-X Ultra is sure to take the automotive industry by storm. It is so light weight, that even a full exterior vehicle coating is only supposed to add around 50 lbs. total weight?! We are excited to see what new products come out using this Line-X Ultra coating too.
But back to Line-X and Armor Flex. So the applications of Line-X with a hard folding tonneau cover like Undercover’s new Armor Flex should be pretty clear. No matter how tough of material you use, whether steel or aluminum, a strong enough impact is going to do some damage. But when you compare even steel or carbon to the durability of Line-X, a clear winner appears.
Line-X is just more durable than all of these materials. Line-X has a very high tensile strength, of upwards of 6,000 PSI. Tensile strength is a measurement that shows how hard it is to break the material under tension. And to give you an example, most top layer coatings made of paint is around 300 to 400 PSI. This layer of protection only adds on to the durability of whatever it is coating.
In the case of Undercover’s Armor Flex, the panels themselves are made of aluminum. This particular material is great for use outside in the elements because it does not rust and turn all yellow or orange and brittle. The Line-X coating makes this already durable material even more so.
Aluminum has an extremely high durability compared to its weight. In other words, these Armor Flex panels will be super tough while still being very light compared to say steel panels. This makes them perfect for such an application as a tonneau cover--which you want to be tough enough to withstand a beating but light enough that you can lift it and fold it up easily by yourself.
On top of the added toughness of Line-X coatings, we have superior resistance to color fade and UV damage. Which leads us to the color of the all new Undercover Armor Flex truck bed cover.
Matte Black Line-X Finish
We all know that these days matte black is where it’s at. There’s just something about it. Seems like everyone is on board now. So if you aren’t, get on it!
Matte Black finishes have come to be an industry standard partially because they pair nicely with OEM features which tend to also be--wait for it--matte black. Line-X just makes it just that much better.
Beyond the impact protective qualities of Line-X, we have resistance to sun damage. This is one we often don’t worry about until it is too late. You’ve seen old vehicles before, the terrible sunspot damage on the hood or roof--or worse yet, the truck bed itself! Gasp!
Line-X takes all that worry away. Since Line-X technology has produced a color-stable property, the matte black finish of the Amor Flex will never fade. Furthermore, this means any bleaching or damaging effect you might normally see from the sun will not mess with the Armor Flex.
It is hard to find a downside to coating anything in such a tough and innovative protective layer as Line-X is. So again, we had to pause and ponder: why hadn’t anyone thought to do this already? Line-X coating is perfect for a tri-folding hard tonneau cover. Brilliant, Undercover and Line-X. Just brilliant.
Now that you know all the reasons why Line-X makes Armor Flex unique and tough as nails, let’s talk about the other great features of Undercover’s new tonneau.
Folding Hard Tonneau Cover
What is it Good For? A Whole Lot
The thing we often say about tri-fold and quad-fold hard tonneau covers is that they are the best of both worlds. When you are shopping for a tonneau cover, you need to ask yourself certain questions before making a purchase. Some of those questions include things like:
Do I need full bed access?
What level of security do I need?
How easy should my cover be to open?
These are some of the top concerns, after all. If you must have full bed access, but you buy a tonneau cover that doesn’t offer this, that could be terrible for you and your truck bed. Furthermore, if you want top of the line security and you end up with a soft vinyl cover that has Velcro attaching it to your truck bed rails, well, needless to say, your truck bed won’t be as secure as you want it to be.
So why are hard folding truck bed covers so great then? Glad you asked.
Hard folding tonneau covers, like Armor Flex, offer the security of a hard truck bed cover with the ease of access of a tri-fold. When your tailgate is closed and locked, any would-be thief is going to have a difficult time getting in. At the same time, a lightweight yet durable folding panel, like Armor Flex utilizes, is easy to fold up, even when your solo.
Armor Flex comes with what’s known in the industry as slam latches. This means that when you go to close the tonneau cover, you can just “slam” it down into place. The locking mechanism then engages, holding the truck bed cover in place.
Full Bed Access
Likewise, the unlock cable can be pulled from either side of the truck bed tailgate. You just pull the cable, and voila! The panel can now be folded up and over, down onto the next panel, and so on and so forth until you get to your bulkhead and rear window.
Armor Flex comes with prop rods that will hold the folded up tonneau in place against the rearview window. This allows you to have complete full truck bed access for when you need to haul large items like furniture, appliances, or motorcycles. I find this super useful when you little brother calls you up and he needs to move out of his apartment like tomorrow, so you just load up your truck and head on out on the road for a 5 hour drive to the middle of nowhere. Fun times.
This is one of the great features about Armor Flex. The ability to drive around with the bed full open really comes in handy, especially when helping someone move. And this is often something we don’t think about until we need it. Some tonneau covers, like retractables, actually limit your truck bed access and space because they have a large canister installed at the bulkhead that takes up valuable truck bed space.
Dual Action Tailgate Seal
Speaking of things we didn’t know we needed until it was too late--let’s talk tailgate seals. There are basically two types: standard and dual action. The old school standard tailgate seal, which is still used pretty often in the industry for some reason, has one huge issue: you can only close your tonneau cover with the tailgate closed.
With a standard seal, if you close the tonneau cover first and then the tailgate, the seal will get bent and perhaps overtime even damaged. And a bent and/or damage seal means it will not be as watertight and will let moisture and such into your truck bed. Basically failing at its one job: sealing the area between your tonneau cover and your tailgate.
While some customers find they are able to easily train their minds and bodies to “always close the tailgate first” (no repeat that, melodically, over and over and over until it sticks. Good luck. Cause you’re gonna forget that one time and…), the truth is, it is always better to have a Dual Action Tailgate Seal. Even if you remember to always close the tailgate first, there’s always your wife or kid or buddy who borrowed the truck to move his fridge and what do you know, he forgot about this and then it rained a bunch and great, now your truck bed isn’t as water tight as it used to be.
With Armor Flex, you get a Dual Action Tailgate Seal, meaning that you can close it in whatever order you’d like. Still prefer to close the tailgate first? No problem. Go for it. Never even realized you were supposed to close the tailgate first? That’s okay too. You can close the tonneau and then close the tailgate and everything will be fine, because it is designed that way.
Obviously, a superior tailgate seal adds a lot of value to your tonneau cover.
Easy, DIY, No Drill Installation
Undercover has made installation super easy. Utilizing clamps and a rail system, the Undercover Armor Flex tonneau cover can be installed in the comfort of your own garage using a socket wrench and some elbow grease.
Elbow grease? What the heck is this grease everyone is always talking about, anyway?
The point is, you can get this product shipped to you for free, from Midwest Aftermarket, and you can then install it at home in 30 minutes or so. You might want a buddy to help you with part of the lifting, but for the most part, this is a one guy show. We like it when install is kept simple.
