    All That Matte

These days, Matte Black finish is in. I can’t tell you how many customers are looking for something that will match their OEM trim. And Matte black is in on OEM, so in aftermarket, it’s the new hotness too.

The Ultra Flex has all that matte though plus a little something extra. If you’ve gotten a chance to peruse some of those pics above, you already know that the Ultra Flex gets its “ultra” from that ultra low profile look. This baby rides low on your truck bed rails, sitting just about as close to flush as you can get.

Personally, I love tonneau covers that appear so perfectly integrated to the rest of your vehicle. And nothing makes a truck bed cover look like it's supposed to be there more than a low-profile. This tonneau has that sweet curb appeal that so many of us truck lovers crave.

    Full Bed Access

When buying a tonneau cover, we always recommend the customer consider a few things. The most obvious and easiest for us all is looks--aesthetics. Do you like the way the cover is going to look on your truck? And if you’re into matte black, then the Ultra Flex has you covered.

One of the harder things to consider is how you’re going to use your truck and hence what kind of truck bed cover you will need. The future is always hard to predict and plan for. Seems to be the nature of the beast. So we always ask a few questions before finalizing a sale.

A big concern should be full truck bed access. How often do you think you’ll need the entire length and width of your truck to haul large items or equipment?

Now off the top of my head, when I purchased my own truck bed cover in the past, I wasn’t even thinking about this. I mean, on the day to day, I want my tonneau to hide the smaller items like a toolbox or groceries that I often have in my truck bed any given day. But every once in a while, I do need full truck bed access.

To that end, I guess it becomes pretty much a no brainer. I mean, do you ever have friends or family who ask you to help them move places? Check. Do they ever have big items like a freezer or couch or bed that would take up your entire truck bed? Duh.

I mean, why would someone ask you to help them move if they didn’t need your truck to haul something big? It’s one of the great perks of having a truck.

And if you’re a handyman or contractor, this is again super obvious. Whether you’re buying an appliance for your own home or picking up some lumber and drywall for a side job, there will be a time and place when you’ll need your entire truck bed.

When that time occurs, if you’ve bought the wrong tonneau cover, you’re going to be cursing. Not all truck bed covers offer full truck bed access. And when you need it, that means you might have to remove the cover or--and here’s the most embarrassing thing ever--you might have to borrow your buddy’s truck cause yours just can’t handle the load!?

    Absolutely shocked and appalled!

Luckily, with the Ultra Flex, this isn’t an issue. This tri-folding cover can be easily folded up and rested against your rear window. The middle panel even comes with a rubber bumper pre-installed just for this purpose. You’ll never have to worry about not having full truck bed access. And you won’t have to uninstall the tonneau every time you need to haul something large. This, while you might not think of it first, is a huge plus.

    BedRug Fiber Carpet Underpanels

As you’re folding up your tonneau cover, you’ll notice that the Ultra Flex has that little something extra that makes it just that much more superior to its competitors: that BedRug style carpet underneath each aluminum panel.

The carpeted look really gives the Ultra Flex that added curb appeal. Nothing says luxury like carpet on any surface you're never gonna walk on. Am I right?

Seriously though, it looks sweet, feels nice, and its marine grade, so you don’t have to worry about mildew or mold. We’re big fans of BedRug, so anytime that great material ends up integrated into other products from Truck Hero, you better bet we’re gonna take notice.

    All About Aluminum

Did you notice I snuck in another great feature of this tonneau cover there? That’s right--all aluminum panels.

There are several huge benefits to going with aluminum panels on this truck bed cover. The most obvious is likely the lightweight nature of aluminum. Heavy tonneau covers not only weigh down your truck but they also are harder to open and close. Imagine having to fold up full steel panels every time you want full bed access.

    No thanks!

So the lightweight of aluminum is a huge benefit.

Something that folks don’t always consider about aluminum though is that it also has a very high durability rating and can handle a lot for its light mass. In fact, when compared to steel, aluminum has a tensile strength only 9k psi lower than steel or 60 MPa lower for those more familiar with the Metric system. And aluminum weighs considerably less than steel. This is also likely why many truck manufacturers are switching to aluminum frames, and--dare I say it--even aluminum beds in some instances.

Finally, aluminum has that great bonus feature of resistance to corrosion. Those of you familiar with my love affair with aluminum are well aware that it isn’t just my fondness of beers and the cans they come in.

Rather, aluminum is great because while it does oxidize (the science-y term for corrode), when aluminum is exposed to air and water, it becomes aluminum oxide, which is still pretty close to the same color as aluminum and is even stronger than aluminum. BAM!

So while every metal on the planet I can think of will oxidize, technically, aluminum doesn’t really rust in the sense of what you think of when you hear that word--

It doesn’t turn orange or brown. It does not become more brittle. If anything it becomes even stronger. Good times.

So all these great features of aluminum make it one of the best materials to make aftermarket parts out of. One of the only drawbacks is the added cost of working with aluminum because it is harder to produce in an environmentally friendly way. Other than that, aluminum is a win all around. And for you as the aftermarket enthusiast, you really would be hard pressed to find a better material for a tonneau cover.

Dual Action or Universal Tailgate Seal

As an added bonus feature to the Ultra Flex, the tailgate seal is a new and improved dual action seal. Those of you familiar with the old school days and the cheap truck bed covers that you had to close after you closed your tailgate, will be super pleased to hear this one.

A Dual Action Seal, also known commonly as a Universal Seal, is one that can be closed before or after you shut your tailgate. Gone are the days when you’d worry did I smash my tailgate seal when I closed my tailgate? Of course, back then you could easily damage your seal, letting water and other detritus in under your tonneau cover.

Nothing worse than finding your gear covered in dust or soaked through because you closed your tailgate after closing your tonneau cover.

With the Ultra Flex, you don’t have to worry anymore. You can close your tailgate first or last. You can slam that tonneau closed before or after you shut and lock your tailgate. It is completely up to you.

Personally this gives me added peace of mind. And I really can’t rant about it enough. This is really a great feature to have in a modern truck bed cover.

    Lit Up

The last major new feature that the Ultra Flex is rocking is that integrated light. Few tonneau covers can boast of such a cool and unique feature as this.

The Ultra Flex comes with an Integrated Luminous Bed Rail Light. This allows you to light up your truck bed whether it is super dark out or something just slid to the back of your bed and you can’t see it even in the daylight.

I often find myself struggling to see under my tonneau cover at night. Sometimes I’ll even have to get out my smartphone and turn on my flashlight feature.

    I know. Damn millennials, right?

Point is, with the Ultra Flex you don’t have to worry about any of that. Just turn on that Integrated Bed Rail Light and easily see everything that’s under your tonneau, even with the cover completely closed.

Putting the Ultra in Ultra Flex

At the end of the day, all these great new features put the Ultra Flex above and beyond so many of the other great folding tonneau covers on the market. Whether it’s the universal seal or the carpeted underpanels, the integrated rail light or the matte black aluminum panels, the Ultra Flex has all this and more in spades.
