Truck Bed Liners: a Must Have Accessory
Why every truck bed needs a bed liner
Let’s start with the obvious questions:
Why do I need a truck bed liner?
A truck bed liner, such as the BedRug Impact Liner, will protect the surface of your bed from scratches, dents, and dings, while also keeping your cargo more secure. Good liners, like the Impact Liner, use anti-skid materials or coatings to keep your gear from sliding around when your truck is in motion.
Or better yet:
What is a truck bed liner?
A truck bed liner is a physical or chemical product that coats or lines your truck’s bed to protect it from damage. Truck bed liner types include:
- Chemical Spray-in Liners
- Plastic One-piece Drop-in Liners
- Multi-piece Liners & Hybrid Liners, like the BedRug Impact Liner
And, of course, the ever popular:
What does a truck bed liner do?
Installing an aftermarket truck bed liner, such as the BedRug Impact Liner, will protect your investment in your truck for years by shielding your truck bed surface from paint damage via scratches, UV light, chemical spills, and even dropping heavy equipment that would dent your truck’s bed. Liners also can add some style and curb appeal to your truck bed.
Which Bed Liner is the Best?
So now that you know a little about what bed liners do and why you need one, let’s break down some of the pros and cons of those different types before laying out exactly what makes the BedRug Impact Liner one of the best out there.
Most Bed Liner add a level of protection and durability to your truck’s bed. However, not all bed liners are created equally. Of course, at the end of the day, many truck owners choose the bed liner that they can afford and the one that looks the best on their truck. So some of this is based on personal preference and opinion and how much you are willing to spend.
Chemical Spray-in Liners
There was a time when these spray-ins were the cream of the bed liner crop. While still extremely durable, customers looking for something they can install in their own garage or something a bit less expensive often look elsewhere these days.
Pros to Spray-in Liners:
- Very Durable
- Some are paintable
- Top sprays are built to last
Cons to Spray-in Liners:
- Cheaper sprays can chip, crack, and fade
- Hard to remove
- Overspray (spray can get on windows/trim during installation)
- Not DIY Friendly
While a good spray-in will last the lifetime of your truck, the cost, fear of overspray, and the pain of removing a faded or cracked spray-in have lead many customers to look elsewhere. Some customers really like the textured look of many spray-ins. Others find that the texture makes hauling products like mulch and dirt rather tedious because colored mulch can stain cheaper spray-in material and the rough surface can be hard to clean afterwards.
The biggest reasons many truck owners have looked for alternatives to classic spray-in liners though are the cost and the fact that you have to pay someone to do the installation for you. While there are many great installers around the US, the fear of overspray is real. And even a great installation guy can have an off-day and get some spray on part of your truck that you didn’t want coated. The added cost of installation often gives consumers pause too.
So what are the alternatives to spray-in liners?
Cheap One-Piece Plastic Liners
The next most common liner is likely the one-piece plastic liner. We always tell our customers that if the price of something seems too good to be true, you should probably be wary. First, the price tag of a plastic liner can be very appealing, especially alongside the cost of having a spray-in professionally installed. However, don’t be fooled. Those one-piece plastic liners are cheap for a reason--most of them are made of cheap molded plastic. And they rarely fit very snug.
Pros to One-Piece Plastic Liners
- Fairly durable
Cons to One-Piece Plastic Liners
- Prone to fading and cracking over time
- Rarely fit well
- Many trap water and moisture underneath causing rust damage
- May scuff up your paint job if not completely secured due to vibration
- Costly to ship to you (high shipping charges)
At the end of the day, the cheapest liner on the market might be so well priced for a reason. I can’t tell you how many horror stories I have heard and even experienced first hand because of a poorly installed one-piece truck bed liner.
Multi-Piece Truck Bed Liners
Multi-Piece liners like DualLiner and BedRug have some additional advantages to the one-piece. First off, many of these products aren’t much more expensive than a one-piece. And they provide all the great protection of the spray-in liner. Part of the reason for this effectiveness has to do with the design. Multi-Piece liners are able to be truly custom fit, designed to fit your truck’s bed exactly. Hence you don’t have to worry about moisture getting trapped underneath or scratches from your liner vibrating all the time.
As an added bonus, many of these liners are what we call hybrid, meaning that they have one material, often a durable yet cushioned mat, on the surface of your bed, and another material on the side walls. This can be more pleasing to the eye, the touch, and frankly just more customizable for you and your truck.
Pros to the Multi-Piece Truck Bed Liners
- Easy to do, DIY Install
- Customizable & Custom Fit to your Truck
- Extremely Durable
- Many are Weather, UV, and, in BedRug’s case, even Chemical Resistant
- Won’t fade or chip
- Bed mats are more easy on your knees and your gear than textured spray-ins
- Affordable to ship to you
- Very easy to clean
- Easy to remove
Cons to Multi-Piece Bed Liners
- Lots of options can make it hard to choose just one
- Most come in 4 or 5 pieces, with simple install instructions
Don’t forget that even if you saw a particular perk with one style or another, at the end of the day you should consider how the product will look in your vehicle as well. If you dig the look of the BedRug and want that classic fiber / marine grade carpet throughout, for instance, you might look at the BedRug Classic instead.
What Makes the New BedRug Impact Liner so Special?
The big appeal and what makes us so excited about BedRug’s newest launch is really the customizability of it. Before the Impact Liner was released, BedRug already had some great options for the truck owner to choose from concerning bed liners. BedRug’s still offers all these great products including the NEW Impact Liner:
- The XLT Bed Mat, which has the BedRug Fiber material and ¾” of thick padding
- The Impact Bed Mat, with textured TPO over ¾” padding
- The Classic Bed Liner, featuring BedRug Fiber throughout the entire bed and walls
And while we love all these products, and having the customization and options of just getting a bed mat or having the full bed liner were great, you couldn’t really have something like the Impact Bed Mat with the Classic Bed Liner on the walls until now.
Today, BedRug offers even more customization in their products by allowing you to have that textured TPO on your truck bed surface and marine grade carpet on the walls. This truly is the best of both worlds for many customers. Those of love the luxurious look and feel of the Bedrug Fiber on their side walls now can have the thick TPO material on the surface too. This new Impact Liner has changed the game in bed liners for good!
