Truck Bed Storage & Toolboxes

Stowing and Going

We all know that you’ve got a lot of sh@t. Maybe you’re still in denial about it all. Trust me when I tell you that everyone around you knows. You’ve got more than enough crap to store in your truck bed and cab. Now that we’ve established this well known fact, it is time to do something about it.

Plain and simple: you need a storage solution. And we’ve got your stowing and going options covered in spades. The question isn’t whether or not you need Truck Bed Storage and/or a Toolbox. The question is which fits your usage.

But before I get too far ahead of myself, let’s start with the basics.

What is truck bed storage and organizers?

Why do I need a truck bed organizer or storage system?

Whether you’re a professional handyman or just your family’s go to carpenter, you need a truck bed storage system to keep your tools and equipment protected and handy for when you need them. We all carry around a number of items in our truck bed and cab on the reg.

These organizes help to keep your gear from prying eyes and protect them from the elements. On top of all that, toolboxes and organizers prevent your tools from sliding around and keep them in one place so you can easily find them when you need them.

What is the number one reason customers give for buying a truck bed toolbox?

This really shouldn’t come as a surprise, but brace yourself just in case: security is the number one reason people buy toolboxes for their truck beds. There may have been a time and a place when we could trust our neighbors, but often times you’re truck is parked in other neighborhoods these days while your working or on the road. So just in case you have any trust issues at all, get a toolbox.

Most of the good toolboxes on the market today come with locking mechanisms. And honestly, I wouldn’t recommend one that didn’t have a lock or at least a way for you to use a combination lock with it (you remember those ones from high school, with the old dials? Fun times, especially if you forget your combo on the reg!).

Many of the toolboxes we sell actually have multiple ways of locking them. While traditional toolboxes only have one locking mechanism typically, many of the other toolboxes we carry fit under tonneau covers, and if your cover locks and your tailgate locks and your new toolbox locks, that’s like triple the protection! Damn! That’s a new level of security, right there.

Front Loaded: Traditional Toolboxes

Many customers have seen these toolboxes before. And there’s nothing wrong with these toolboxes. There’s something about tradition and being tried and true, so to speak. If you are looking for a regular ol’ toolbox, WeatherGuard, UWS, and DeeZee have some great offerings. Most of these boxes have their own locking mechanism and are made of metal for that rugged look.

I can remember growing up my grandpa had a traditional toolbox like these. Often times he could just reach in from the side of the truck and grab a hammer or whatever he was looking for. My family was mostly carpenters and roofers growing up. And even when I was really little, I’d ride along and help out when I could. One of the tasks I often got assigned was hopping up into the back of the pickup to get a tool that had slide out of reach, to the dead center of the toolbox.

I can remember my dad doing this curious little hop to try to reach a carpenter’s belt that had slide just a little too far towards the center of the toolbox. I would jump up into the truck bed and get it for him. And don’t get me wrong. I was like 5, and I loved the idea that I was helping out. But child labor laws being what they are today, I just don’t know how many of you keep a scrappy kid around on the job site to play gopher when you can’t reach something in your toolbox. Not many, I imagine.

While the construction and design of these traditional toolboxes made a lot of sense at the time, the truth is they are mad inconvenient. Even if you have a smaller pickup, reaching into the box from the edge of your truck’s bed can be quite difficult. So while we still offer a lot of these styles of toolboxes, there are some great innovative new designs out there that are well worth considering.

Easy Tool Access: SwingCase

But let’s say you don’t want to go with the crowd. Maybe you don’t want to have to hop up into your truck bed to get tools out all the time. Maybe you aren’t as spry as you used to be or don’t have a grandson who follows you around to your various jobs, getting you tools when you need ‘em. Or perhaps you have a tonneau cover and want to add on a toolbox without having to replace the truck bed cover.

SwingCase is your answer. This specialized truck toolbox fits at the end of your truck’s bed and swings out over the tailgate for easy access. It fits easily under most tonneau covers, and provides exceptional storage for tools and other valuable gear. SwingCase has a locking system just like traditional toolboxes, but it also has the added security that it isn’t nearly as visible, especially if completely hidden beneath a locked tonneau. Since UnderCover launched their SwingCase, it has been one of our top sellers in the toolbox department. We really can’t say enough about this innovative design, but in case you want to put that to the test, read our full review here.

Alright, so I just couldn’t shut up about SwingCase. Not only is the design really cool, with the ability to swing it out over the top of your tailgate, but the amount of storage these cases can hold is pretty amazing. A SwingCase can be installed in the comfort of your own home in about 10 minutes. To swing it out, you just move the little yellow lever shown at the bottom of the case. And each toolbox can hold upwards of 75 lbs.

What’s our favorite use of the SwingCase here at work?

I’m so glad you asked, cause we just love loading them up with ice and beers for that road trip that ends up in a picnic lunch with beers and brats. Some days we just load up the grill in the back of the truck, pop ice and beers in our dual SwingCases, and drive on down the road to a little lake and park area in town. We kickback in our truck beds, drinking and chatting, while our humble CEO, Cass Cooper, grills us up some meats!

We love SwingCase not only cause it’s waterproof and hence holds ice like a cooler, but also because it utilizes space that is most often wasted in your truck bed. I mean, what can you really store behind your wheel wells? Nada, until now. SwingCases innovative design makes it one of our favorite toolboxes on the market today. It’s just a bonus that these babies are made right here in the United States.

Let’s say you’re looking for something other than a toolbox. There are other items besides just toolboxes after all in the storage and truck bed organizing space. What about a slide?

Mover Extraordinaire: the BedSlide

So this is one of the best products I never knew I absolutely needed. Thinking back over all the times I have moved myself and my family and my friends and random strangers over the years, I wish every single truck I’ve owned and used had had a BedSlide installed. If you are loading and unloading gear, boxes, furniture, and other large items regularly, or heck, even once in a while, get one of these and thank me later.

As the pics show, the BedSlide is a platform that slides from inside your truck’s bed over the top of the tailgate. Talk about back and knee saver! I didn’t know such a product existed. And now that I do, I wish so very much we’d had one installed years ago. So much moving. Hell, one year alone, I moved myself three times, two of my buddies once, and my sister and her roommate. And that roommate had a gawl darn piano! The point is, a BedSlide really would have come in handy.

The stock BedSlide Classic can handle upwards of 1,000 lbs. That’s a lot of Uncle Ruckus’ boxes loaded with “vintage” magazines, if you know what I mean. All kidding aside, imagine if every time you go to load or unload your truck with anything at all, you no longer have to get up into the truck bed to get it off. You just slide that aptly named BedSlide out the tailgate and easily pick up whatever you loaded without having to stoop down or jump up into the bed. This storage solution is a back saver and a knee protector. Your body will thank you in the long run. And it makes your life so much easier. I really couldn’t recommend it more, except I have, so you can read the full laud and honor review here.

So let’s say a slide isn’t exactly what you wanted. You were looking for a truck bed storage solution. Let me tell you, you were almost there. You don’t want a storage solution, you want the best damn truck bed organizer ever imagined. Are you ready to get yourself Decked?!

Ultimate Organizer: Decked

Thought we were really drooling over the BedSlide? We were. But we drool ever more heavily and fervently over the Decked Storage System. Or… Think maybe that came out wrong, but you get what we mean. What makes Decked the ultimate in truck bed organizers? Let me tell ya.

Decked transforms your entire truck bed into two massive tool boxes with locks and adjustable trays. Talk about maximizing your space, with Decked, it’s almost like you have two truck beds. You can still store whatever you want on top of the Decked box, just like you normally would, but underneath is hidden storage for everything from expensive tools to firearms.

Doubly secure, each tool box drawer can be locked within the Decked system and is impossible to access when your tailgate is up and locked. Since each Decked drawer slides out beyond your tailgate, your stowed gear is incredibly easy to access. Now if only we could find a way to have a Decked Storage System underneath a BedSlide Classic? Get on it, enthusiasts! Want a more in depth look at Decked? Read our full review with sweet pictures here. Oh, and did I mention the ammo cans?! I forgot? Well, have a look at the diagram or go read the full article, or heck, just order one cause you know now that you know about Decked your gonna have to get one soon! At least, that’s what happened to me.
